Adapting to Newcomers
As you may already know, conflict can occur a lot in friendships. One big conflict in friendships is when other people get in between the two of you, whether that person is someone you both have a crush on, or another friend. Here’s what you can do to deal with that situation:
Gossip/Rumors
Gossip and rumors are bound to happen, but most of the time it is hurtful and hard to deal with. Here are a few ways to get through those situations.
Friendship Problems

Long Distance
It can be really difficult when a good friend moves away. Not having someone nearby you can always rely on can be rough. Here are some ways to maintain those friendships:

- Talk to your friend about how you feel.
- Maybe you can build a stronger friendship with the newcomer – have an open mind.
- Try to make new friends besides those two people.
- If things don’t work out, remember that friendships don’t always last forever and you’ll meet new people in the future.

- Don’t share information you don’t want anyone to hear unless you trust that person.
- Try to change the topic of a conversation when someone brings up gossip.
- Don’t jump to conclusions and instead listen to the truth from the person the gossip is about.
- If it’s not your business, stay out of it.
- If you know something going around about someone is untrue, stand up for that person.
Friendship Problems

- If you start to see a problem occurring in your friendship, talk to your friend about it.
- If you’re going to talk to someone about a problem, DO NOT do it over text. The best way is face to face.
- If you’re not sure how to approach the situation, get advice from another friend who you trust.
- When you talk to your friend, make sure you’re calm and don’t blame them for anything.
- If you take no action on the situation, you’re only hurting yourself keeping it all bottled up.
- Always remember that you can also speak to trusted adults, like your parents, your school guidance counselor or your principal.

- Although texts are really convenient, phone calls can make you feel better when you hear their voice.
- Even though you don’t see them anymore, keep conversations upbeat – don’t make things sad and awkward all the time.
- If you think your friendship is starting to fade, just remember when you reunite, it’s as if nothing has ever changed.
